Behind the Scenes

Hello, my name is Caryn and Salvage for the Soul is my new business. I’m finding old, sad furniture and giving it a new life. I’m also looking for fun accessories that will compliment my furniture and your home.

I have a pretty varied background. I started out as a graphic designer, moved into teaching design, switched to design history and almost finished a PhD, and then ended up most recently teaching art history and design history.

But, academia is not a good place to be anymore, and I have small children at home, one of whom needs extra attention, so I need something I can do from home (or at least supplement a part time job with).

Anyway, that’s how Salvage for the Soul was born. I’ve always loved design and while I started in 2D design, I was always interested in 3D – furniture, architecture, sculpture. It’s a natural evolution for me.

This blog is a place for me to document not just my furniture projects, but my efforts to make this a viable income stream (I don’t quite have the nerve to call it a ‘job’ yet!).

Anyway, that’s it in a nutshell. Thanks for stopping by!
